LG Electronics is accelerating its expansion of the 'AI Home' ecosystem by unveiling next-generation IoT (Internet of Things) devices co-developed with Apple.
On Tuesday (local time), LG Electronics and Apple held a new product launch event in Manhattan, New York, revealing seven next-generation IoT devices: an indoor camera, two types of outdoor cameras distinguished by whether they are equipped with floodlights, a doorbell, a door lock, a thermostat, and a temperature sensor. The companies announced on Wednesday that these products are scheduled for initial release in North America, including the United States and Canada, as well as the United Kingdom, within the year.
A key feature of these products is the combination of customer experience data and manufacturing capabilities accumulated by LG Electronics over a long period in residential spaces with user experiences based on Apple’s platform ecosystem.
To date, the two companies have collaborated closely from the initial stages of product planning under the shared goal of creating an intuitive and convenient AI Home environment that naturally integrates into customers’ daily lives.
LG Electronics will enable the organic integration of its AI Home platform, 'LG ThinQ,' with Apple’s ecosystem and the seven new products. Users can check device status and control them easily anytime, anywhere. All products connect simply with a single touch to mobile devices such as iPhones and iPads. Device usage history is automatically saved in the cloud as personalized data, allowing for convenient management.
The thermostat comprehensively analyzes user movement patterns, time of day, and weather conditions detected via iPhone or Apple Watch to adjust indoor heating and cooling environments for comfort. It also optimizes the overall heating and cooling status of the entire home based on information collected by sensors installed in each space.
The door lock, equipped with multiple sensors, detects subtle user movements and analyzes entry intent to open the door without separate operation. If abnormal situations occur, such as the door being opened, tampering attempts, or unauthorized entry, it immediately sends notifications to mobile devices, enhancing security.
Camera-equipped products, including indoor and outdoor cameras and the doorbell, incorporate 'Vision AI' technology, allowing customers to intuitively check conditions inside and outside their homes. The outdoor camera and doorbell, which face outward, distinguish between people, animals, cars, and deliveries to provide situation-appropriate notifications. They are also equipped with IP65-rated dust and water resistance to ensure durability.
The indoor camera not only recognizes people and pets but also detects abnormal sounds such as a baby crying or glass breaking, delivering immediate customized notifications. Through organic integration between devices, the indoor camera automatically switches to privacy protection mode upon the user’s return home. The outdoor camera monitors the surroundings of the home 24 hours a day and immediately sends alerts to mobile devices when abnormal situations occur.
LG Electronics has also strengthened security features. To thoroughly protect customers’ sensitive daily data, the company applied LG Shield, its security solution, along with Apple’s robust data encryption technology, minimizing the possibility of hacking or data leaks. Additionally, design completeness was enhanced with three color options—Essence Graphite, Essence White, and Essence Silver—and finishes that minimize seams.
Most importantly, through these new products, LG Electronics plans to significantly strengthen its lineup of IoT devices, a core element of the AI Home, and further expand the AI Home ecosystem that extends from the hub 'ThinQ On' and the platform 'ThinQ' to AI home appliances. Furthermore, the company aims to broaden the scope of the AI Home by organically integrating with Apple’s platform, which has over 2.5 billion devices, thereby innovating the customer experience.
Jung Ki-hyun, head of LG Electronics’ HS Platform Business Center, said, "By combining our expertise in home appliances and indoor spaces with Apple’s unparalleled user experience and both companies’ strong security capabilities, we will provide a safe and intuitive AI Home experience."
