A wife who assaulted her husband after he lost over 200 million won in virtual currency investments was criticized by lawyers for treating her actions lightly while claiming "he deserved it."
In an episode of JTBC's 'Divorce Reflection Camp' aired on the 27th, a Season 23 'Coin Couple' was shown consulting with a lawyer ahead of final mediation.
It is reported that the husband lost about 200 million won after investing in virtual currencies using his wife's money, his child's baptism ring, and a loan of 60 million won taken out in his mother-in-law's name.
On the broadcast, the husband revealed that he was assaulted by his wife after she learned of his investment failure. He said, "I went into the room and got hit for five minutes. My stomach was kicked repeatedly, and my head and cheeks were also struck."
When lawyer Park Min-cheol pointed out, "Five minutes is an incredibly long time to be beaten. Since it constitutes assault, you should claim damages," the husband replied, "I tried to defend myself, but my wife's strength was stronger than I expected. It hurts."
However, the wife said, "Even if a woman hits a man, it probably doesn't hurt much," adding, "A man hitting a woman can be fatal, but I've never seen a case where a man died from being hit by a woman. How painful could it possibly be?"
In response, lawyer Yang Na-rae pointed out that assault can be punishable regardless of gender. The wife then retorted, "So even if a woman hits a man, she faces criminal charges? But my husband deserved it. Shouldn't I just endure it?"
Lawyer Yang warned, "Claiming someone 'deserved' to be beaten is never justified," and added, "You must be careful from now on."
It was also mentioned that the wife sent a text message containing abusive language to her in-laws regarding her husband's investment failure.
Lawyer Yang explained, "Even if you are angry, going beyond what is generally acceptable increases your own fault," and noted this could negatively affect damage calculations in divorce lawsuits.
In response, the wife said, "(The text sent to my in-laws) was nothing compared to that," adding, "My husband lost 210 million won, yet I'm being labeled as at-fault just for sending a few such messages. I don't understand that."
Lawyer Yang once again pointed out that it is unreasonable to aggressively confront one's in-laws over the husband's mistakes.
