LG Innotek announced on the 27th that it will supply vehicle camera modules to 'Zoox', an autonomous driving subsidiary of U.S. Amazon. This marks the first time LG Innotek has supplied camera modules for robotaxis in Yangsan.
Zoox is an autonomous driving technology company acquired by Amazon in 2020. Following the establishment of the world's first robotaxi manufacturing plant in Hayward, California, last year, it has officially launched robotaxi call services in Las Vegas. It provides unmanned autonomous driving call services using its own dedicated robotaxis.
LG Innotek has maintained a cooperative relationship with Zoox since the early stages of robotaxi development. Based on the partnership between the two companies, LG Innotek's camera modules are scheduled to be installed in Zoox robotaxis for several years to come. The product is a 5-megapixel high-resolution camera module that applies LG Innotek's ultra-precise optical design technology accumulated in the mobile camera module field.
LG Innotek's vehicle cameras installed in Zoox robotaxis support different fields of view depending on their mounting positions. This minimizes blind spots and enables precise 360-degree sensing around the vehicle. The cameras maintain performance even under extreme external temperature fluctuations and feature waterproofing, allowing stable sensing in various weather conditions.
Alongside vehicle camera modules, LG Innotek is accelerating development of key sensing components required for autonomous driving, including LiDAR and Radar. It is also expanding cooperation in the software sector. This year, it has already signed a strategic partnership with U.S. autonomous driving software company 'Applied Intuition'. Domestically, it has signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Kakao Mobility for the development of autonomous driving solutions.
LG Innotek plans to expand its autonomous driving sensor solution business revenue to 2 trillion won by 2030, based on the technology accumulated in its mobile camera module business. According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, the global robotaxi market size is projected to reach $168 billion (approximately 233 trillion won) by 2035.
An LG Innotek official stated, "Through this supply, we expect to solidify the long-standing partnership between the two companies and lay the foundation for developing physical AI businesses such as autonomous driving."
