Shinsegae Group will invest $1 billion (approximately 1.4 trillion won) in the acquisition bid for Warner Bros., a global content company representing Hollywood in the United States. This is interpreted as an expression of Jeong Yong-jin (Chairman)'s intention to expand its new business areas into the content sector, following artificial intelligence (AI).
On the 6th, Shinsegae Group announced that its affiliate Shinsegae Property will invest in the acquisition of Warner Bros. together with Chairman David Ellison (Co-CEO of Skydance), U.S. fund investment firm Redbird, and others. The investment amount is known to be $1 billion.
This decision is part of a strategy to build new business competitiveness by combining the distribution and entertainment sectors into a platform.
Shinsegae Group presented a new vision to leap forward as a new content hub representing Asia, beyond Korea, by utilizing Paramount content with many fans worldwide, such as Mission: Impossible, and Warner Bros. intellectual property (IP), including Harry Potter and Game of Thrones.
A Shinsegae Group official explained, "This is a decision to expand our business portfolio into the global content sector to cultivate a new growth engine," adding, "It means we will create synergies between our existing distribution business and entertainment operations to become a global retail and entertainment platform."
Shinsegae Group is collaborating with Paramount on a theme park project within its approximately 10 trillion won-scale "Hwaseong Starbay City" development project. Adding content through the acquisition of Warner Bros. could enhance competitiveness.

Simultaneously, it is expected that indoor complex shopping malls operated by Shinsegae Group, such as Starfield, Starfield Market, and Starfield Village, will attract customers by installing experience facilities and diverse themed spaces based on the IP of both companies.
Shinsegae Group expects that this decision will also enable cooperation in the online video service (OTT) sector, including HBO Max and Paramount Plus. Linking this with the memberships of online and offline affiliates, including E-Mart, is expected to increase customer benefits and significantly contribute to securing loyal customers.
In the long term, Shinsegae Group is also envisioning a blueprint to leap forward as a new powerhouse in the Asian content market by producing content that can captivate audiences together with Paramount Skydance Group, which will own Warner Bros.
In particular, if the business expands to joint production or partnerships for Korean original content using HBO Max and Paramount Plus, which have over 200 million subscribers, Shinsegae Group is expected to contribute to expanding the base of "K-Culture" riding the wave of the "K-Content boom."
Shinsegae Group stated, "This investment will serve as a stepping stone for Shinsegae Group to diversify into new business areas combining entertainment, going beyond a simple equity investment," adding, "Through this investment, we will create an opportunity for Shinsegae Group to leap forward as a platform company in the Asian content market."
