Fencing national team power analysts can now finish organizing match analysis data in just 10 minutes. This follows SK Telecom's introduction of an AI-powered power analysis system that automatically identifies scoring and conceding moments, as well as player movements, from match footage for national team training. The task time has been reduced to one-sixth of the previous approximately one hour.
On the 26th, SKT announced this development after co-developing and enhancing an AI-based power analysis system called 'SKT-FAN (Fencing AI Nexus)' with the Korean Fencing Federation. According to the company, the national team is already using the system in actual training ahead of the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with plans to further improve its functionality and analytical accuracy through the 2028 Los Angeles (LA) Olympics.
Previously, fencing power analysis required two analysts to review full match footage and manually edit and compile necessary scenes. With an average of about one hour needed per match, there were physical limitations in analyzing overseas rival players as well.
SKT-FAN entrusts such repetitive tasks to AI. Using computer vision technology, the system recognizes score changes and player movements in video, identifies scoring and conceding moments, and automatically generates timelines and highlights. As a result, the time required to organize match analysis data has been shortened from about one hour to 10 minutes.
Player movements are also analyzed using standard match footage without additional sensors. Through 'sensorless motion capture' technology, the system tracks joint positions of players and converts their movements into a database. By combining this with proprietary algorithms reflecting the characteristics of foil, epee, and sabre, along with LLMs (large language models), the system automatically generates power analysis reports detailing opponents' strengths and weaknesses as well as match-specific features.
AI handles video organization and initial analysis, while power analysts and coaches review the results to apply them in actual strategies. SKT aims to reduce repetitive tasks related to video analysis by up to 90% and expand the scope of analysis to include preliminary rounds and matches against overseas players. In the future, the company plans to further enhance the system for real-time analysis that allows checking opponent data during tournaments and utilizing it for next-match strategies.
SKT has served as the title sponsor of the Korean Fencing Federation for 24 years since 2003, with cumulative sponsorship reaching 36 billion won. While previously supporting infrastructure and events, this year SKT expanded its support scope by integrating its proprietary AI technology to enhance national team performance.
Oh Wan-geun, Secretary-General of the Korean Fencing Federation, stated, "With the Asian Games approaching, the AI power analysis system developed by SKT is being used in actual training, and both athletes and coaching staff are highly satisfied." He added, "We expect it to be actively utilized in tournament preparation and deliver excellent results."
