Singer Roy Kim (33) addressed the controversy over allegedly promising to perform a wedding song for broadcaster Ji Ye-eun and dancer Bata before backing out.
In a recent SNS (social media) live broadcast, Roy Kim stated, "Articles and short videos about wedding songs have been pouring in lately." He continued, "I never promised to perform a wedding song. It was disappointing that I appeared as if I had made a promise and then failed to keep it. It was Kim Jong-kook who made the promise," he explained.
Previously, on the 22nd of last month, in a video published on the YouTube channel "Jim Jong-kook," Roy Kim shared his burden while discussing wedding songs with Kim Jong-kook, saying, "There are so many requests for wedding songs that I find it hard to respond easily."
He confessed to the difficulties in interpersonal relationships arising from declining wedding song requests, stating, "When I sing a wedding song for someone, others get upset and say, 'Aren't you close to me too?' or they curse behind my back because I didn't perform for them."
Kim Jong-kook, who was listening, mentioned an incident during a past filming of the SBS variety show "Running Man" and asked Roy Kim, "Didn't you tell Ji Ye-eun that you would sing her wedding song when she asked?"
Caught off guard, Roy Kim replied, "Did I say that? If the timing works out, I would like to do it with a celebratory spirit,…" failing to give a definitive answer. In response, Kim Jong-kook called Ji Ye-eun to verify the matter.
Ji Ye-eun insisted, "It is true that you said you would do it when we were eating gukbap (Korean beef soup)." As Roy Kim looked awkward, Ji Ye-eun revealed her disappointment by saying, "If you really don't want to do it,…"
Roy Kim clarified, "It's not that I don't want to do it," and Kim Jong-kook tried to smooth over the situation by stating, "The company has set a principle of not performing wedding songs." However, Ji Ye-eun countered, "Then why did you say you would do it at that time? Are you saying two different things with one mouth?"
Afterward, as the video spread on online communities and elsewhere, controversy arose over the perception that Roy Kim was refusing wedding songs based on closeness or breaking a promise. However, Roy Kim maintains that he never actually promised to perform a wedding song.
In the live broadcast, Roy Kim also shared his feelings about the reactions surrounding him. He said, "Because I have been active a lot lately, there is a lot of content about me." He added, "There are many light evaluations and casually thrown words. I am trying my best not to be shaken by such things."
He continued, "I would like you all to help me when I am shaken. Human compassion is dropping endlessly." He stated, "Looking at the concert audiences who come to see me, I need to raise human compassion again. When criticizing someone, please always be careful with the thought that the arrow may also return to yourself," he urged.
