HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said Tuesday that it has secured an order from HMM for eight 13,000 TEU (one 20-foot container) LNG dual-fuel powered container ships.
The total contract value is approximately 1.9196 trillion won. The vessels ordered this time measure 337 meters in length, 51 meters in width, and 27.9 meters in height, and are equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of using both LNG and conventional ship fuel. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Samho will build two and six ships, respectively, with sequential deliveries to HMM scheduled by 2029.
Notably, the ships will feature independent LNG fuel tanks produced at HD Hyundai Eco Vina, HD Hyundai’s eco-friendly independent tank manufacturing base. By establishing a structure that supplies everything from ship design and construction to core equipment within the group, HD Hyundai aims to enhance its competitiveness in the eco-friendly shipbuilding sector.
This order is seen as the result of aligned interests between HMM, which is expanding its eco-friendly fleet, and HD Hyundai, which has accumulated technology for eco-friendly fuel-powered ships using LNG and methanol. Leveraging this contract, HD Hyundai plans to expand cooperation with HMM and strengthen its competitiveness in the high-value-added eco-friendly ship market.
An official from HD Hyundai said, "Inquiries for orders of LNG carriers, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers, container ships, and other vessels have been continuing, centered on global shipping lines," adding, "Based on our accumulated design and construction expertise and customer trust, we will expand orders for high-value-added eco-friendly ships to maximize profitability."
