LG Energy Solution is aiming for a "number one" position not only in battery hardware but also in "software." Based on this, the company's strategy is to maintain its unique position in the Energy Storage System (ESS) market.
Kim Hyeon-tae, vice president in charge of ESS Product Planning and Strategy at LG Energy Solution, said, "It is important to make battery hardware as cheaply as possible. Nevertheless, we need to provide solutions that can create value-added benefits of over $100 in the future, even if customers pay an additional $1 or $5."
He made the remarks at the 'Smart Energy Plus (SEP) 2026' conference held in Hall B of COEX in Seoul Samsung-dong, Friday.
He continued, "In addition to providing the hardware we have consistently done well with, we will further enhance customer value by offering additional solutions," emphasizing, "LG Energy Solution is currently preparing for this strategy."
LG Energy Solution holds a leading position in the ESS market. As of the end of last year, its ESS order backlog reached approximately 140 GWh (gigawatt-hours). It is estimated that the company secured new ESS project orders worth over 3 trillion won in the first half of this year alone. This achievement was built on its battery hardware technology. The company aims to secure a unique position in the market by providing differentiated software solutions.
Kim explained, "With the arrival of the AI era, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) must shift from passive operations that simply charge and discharge to more active roles." He noted, "The role is expanding to comprehensively analyze when to discharge or charge energy according to market conditions, when electricity prices reach their maximum or minimum points, and provide this information to customers."
He stated, "From this perspective, the time has come for ESS solutions equipped with intelligent platforms and software functions, moving beyond just hardware, to be needed in the market." He mentioned, "We are preparing solutions that utilize data to advance our software and enable more efficient use of ESS based on that software."
He then introduced AEROS, LG Energy Solution's dedicated ESS software. AEROS consists of △Onsite, which handles field control; △Cloud, a digital Operation and Maintenance (O&M) tool; △Intelligence, an operation optimization solution; and △Trading, a power trading operation solution.
It integrates and controls distributed individual facilities such as batteries, Power Conversion Systems (PCS), and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems as a single power plant unit for monitoring purposes. It synthesizes data on battery status, generation, and load forecasting, allowing for the pre-detection of abnormal signs such as overcharging, over-discharging, and temperature anomalies.
Kim said, "Our goal is to reduce the error in available energy to within 2% through users' real-time data, and we are almost close to achieving this." He added, "Through this, we aim to provide real-time information on the available energy possible over the next week." Furthermore, he emphasized, "We will support customers in maximizing revenue without constraints by accurately predicting even 1% more of usable energy through flexible warranties."
