As the film 'The Odyssey' was shot in IMAX (IMAX), competition for IMAX theater reservations has intensified, with scalpers also emerging. Director Christopher Nolan expressed his opinion that "it is not necessary to watch it exclusively in an IMAX theater."
On the episode of tvN's variety show 'You Quiz on the Block' aired on the 12th, director Christopher Nolan and lead actor Matt Damon appeared as guests for the film 'The Odyssey'.
That day, MC Yoo Jae-suk introduced 'The Odyssey' by stating it was "the first commercial film to be shot entirely in IMAX film." He further revealed that the total length of the film used reached approximately 640 kilometers and that about 4.2 billion won was invested solely in producing the film, sparking surprise.
Director Nolan cited overwhelming image quality and detail as reasons for insisting on IMAX film. He explained that he first introduced IMAX film through the movie 'The Dark Knight', noting, "It captures color and detail similar to the human eye."
He continued, "If a film director wants to bring audiences into the screen, IMAX is the most perfect choice," emphasizing, "It allows viewers to experience even the smells, tastes, and textures of the scene. It is the best method to draw audiences into the movie."
In response, Yoo Jae-suk mentioned the recent situation where tickets for 'The Odyssey' in IMAX theaters were selling out quickly. He expressed regret, saying, "I tried to book a ticket but couldn't."
In fact, on the ticket transfer platform 'Ticketbay', tickets for 'The Odyssey' screening at the CGV Yongsan iPark Mall IMAX theater were being resold at around 120,000 won, approximately six times the regular price. The general ticket price for the CGV Yongsan iPark Mall IMAX theater ranges from 17,000 to 22,000 won depending on the time slot and day of the week. Some sellers are reportedly reselling so-called 'prime seats' at a premium.
The scalping issue for 'The Odyssey' is not limited to Korea. According to the New York Post on the 21st (local time), tickets for 'The Odyssey' at AMC Lincoln Square 13, the only IMAX 70mm theater in New York, were also traded in the scalping market at dozens of times the regular price.
However, Director Nolan emphasized that audiences can fully enjoy the film's merits even without an IMAX theater. He stated, "You can fully experience the advantages of an IMAX-shot film in a general theater," adding, "Since it was shot with overwhelming resolution, it is fine to watch it outside an IMAX theater."
'The Odyssey' is an epic story about the hero 'Odysseus', who led Troy to victory, fighting against the gods' anger as he attempts to return home. Released on the 5th, the film has recorded a cumulative audience count of 2.61 million viewers as of the 13th.
