YouTuber 'Honorary Briton' Baek Jin-kyung, who is about to give birth in the UK, expressed bewilderment over the controversy surrounding her alleged overseas childbirth.
On the 12th, Baek Jin-kyung clarified on social media (SNS) that "I don't understand why giving birth in the UK has become such a big issue. My husband is British, and I reside in London."
Previously, Baek Jin-kyung sparked controversy after stating on a broadcast that she would give birth in the UK. Speculation arose that she might be choosing to give birth abroad to secure British citizenship for her child.
In response, Baek Jin-kyung explained that since the UK applies the principle of jus sanguinis (right of blood), a child can acquire British citizenship if at least one parent is British, regardless of the place of birth.
She pointed out, "(Overseas childbirth) is only possible in countries like the United States that follow jus soli (right of soil). Claiming to give birth abroad for the citizenship of a baby with Korean and British heritage is truly strange and ridiculous."
Baek Jin-kyung married a British man three years her junior in March 2023. Currently pregnant, she is scheduled to give birth to a daughter in December.
