SK Group's selection of Jung Seung-il, an energy expert, as the new head of SK Innovation is seen as a strategic move to bolster Chairman Chey Tae-won's 'AI (artificial intelligence) full stack' strategy. As Chairman Chey has expressed strong resolve to expand semiconductor production capacity centered on SK hynix, the role of SK Innovation in 'power infrastructure' is also expected to grow.
According to SK Innovation on Friday, newly appointed Chief Executive Jung is an energy sector expert who has successively served as Vice Minister at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and President of Korea Gas Corporation and KEPCO. Recently, he has been overseeing the group's medium- to long-term energy business as President in charge of Future Growth at SK Inc. and President of the Energy Task Force (TF) at SK hynix.
Industry observers are linking Jung's appointment to a shift in SK Innovation's role. While his predecessor, Chief Executive Jang Yong-ho, was known for strengths in strategy and finance, Jung has accumulated experience across the entire energy and power industry. Analysts suggest that SK Innovation's center of gravity is shifting toward future energy businesses as its major business restructuring (rebalancing) has largely been completed.
In fact, Chairman Chey has increasingly emphasized the 'AI full stack' strategy since the beginning of this year. The AI full stack is SK's core strategy to secure competitiveness across the entire AI value chain, from AI memory to data center infrastructure and energy and power. As efforts to expand semiconductor production capacity gain momentum, the importance of an energy supply chain that can stably support these operations is also growing.
SK Innovation appears set to expand its role in supplying energy needed for the group's AI and semiconductor businesses. Given its diverse portfolio ranging from refining and petrochemicals to batteries, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and power, attention is turning to potential synergies with group affiliates such as SK hynix.

The fact that the energy industry is heavily influenced by government policy and regulation is also cited as a background for Jung's appointment. This is because his experience spanning the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Korea Electric Power Corporation, and Korea Gas Corporation can be leveraged.
An SK official stated, "President Jung will oversee SK Innovation's strategy for transitioning to power business and lead its transformation into a comprehensive energy company," adding that he is "a figure with extensive experience in both power infrastructure and the broader market."
Newly appointed Chief Executive Jung and Kang Dong-su, who has taken over as CEO of SK Innovation after serving as President in charge at SK Inc., are a representative financial expert within the group, having overseen SK Innovation's strategy and finance line during the merger with SK E&S. They are expected to take over roles previously handled by Jang, such as optimizing the business portfolio and improving operational efficiency.
Existing SK Innovation executives will be reassigned. Jang Yong-ho, who has led SK Inc. since 2024 and concurrently served as Chief Executive of SK Innovation since May last year, will focus on managing the holding company. Choo Hyeong-uk, who has been in charge of LNG, power, and hydrogen businesses as well as improving the profitability of SK On, will move to oversee the group's Southeast Asia operations.
Choi Chang-won, Chairman of the SK Supecs Council, whose position was a focus of interest in this personnel change, has been retained. As large-scale business restructuring, including the sale of non-core assets over the past two years, has largely been completed, the focus is expected to shift toward meticulously refining the remaining portfolio.
Maintaining financial stability while concentrating investment capacity on growth businesses such as AI amid continued large-scale investments centered on semiconductors is also a challenge. Chairman Choi is expected to continue his role in managing the group's overall financial soundness and coordinating future growth investments.
An SK official said, "We plan to enhance the competitiveness and profitability of existing businesses while accelerating our transition into an electric utility company to solidify the foundation for sustainable growth."
