Samsung Electronics to Reap Huge Profit from OneNAND Flash

Samsung Electronics will aggressively attack the mobile equipment market with its OneNAND flash memory devices.

Samsung Electronics said on April 7 that it has launched new software for OneNAND to be used in various mobile operating systems along with its OneNANDTM flash memory to provide a one-stop service to mobile equipment manufacturers.

Samsung Electronics’ OneNAND is a fusion memory device based on NAND architecture integrating buffer memory and logic. As a result, OneNAND takes advantage of NOR flash’s high speed read and fast write of NAND flash for data storage. OneNAND software solutions enable OneNAND to operate at its optimum in various mobile operating systems.

Samsung Electronics predicted that OneNAND would quickly substitute NOR flash chips as its speed read is 60 times faster and it can operate in all mobile operating systems. Hence the demand for OneNAND is projected to skyrocket in the advanced mobile equipment market.

According to iSupply, a market research institute, the 3G mobile phone market, which is the largest market for OneNAND, is expected to grow 87% annually until 2008, which is much higher than the average growth rate of 3% for the entire mobile phone market.

Samsung Electronics seems to be trying to take control of the 3G mobile phone market by introducing its OneNAND flash and related software solutions simultaneously.

A source at Samsung Electronics said, “Mobile set designers will be able to use our OneNAND in any operating system since we have introduced both OneNAND and related software that can be used in any operating system.”

Samsung’s optimized software solutions for its OneNAND flash memory include XSR (eXtended Sector Remapper), Pocket Store II, UniStore II, TFS4 and TFS4-Lite, and RFS (Robust File System).

They enable OneNAND to operate at its optimum level in any operating system and prevent data loss from sudden power loss.

Samsung Electronics is offering its OneNAND software as well as user’s manual, installation instruction, and answers to various questions through its homepage.

Samsung Electronics plans to aggressively attack the mobile equipment market this year with 256Mb, 512Mb, and 1 GB OneNAND products. The electronics company also plans to mass produce 2 GB or larger OneNAND devices next year.
